I have so many accounts to so many websites, that I can’t do anything really productive. I’ve decided to clean up my accounts and delete any that I don’t use or deem useless. Leo at Zen Habits is a big inspiration. I really like the idea of keeping everything to a minimum. No more will I sign up to something just because someone tells me to, or because I can get something free out of it.
I signed up for TheStreet.com when they had a contest last year. This past week, e-mails have been showing up in my inbox by the dozen. Not only do I not want them, but their opt-out page is overwhelmingly confusing. There starts my little expedition to clean out all these useless accounts and get make my subscriptions easier to manager.
After 15 minutes of digging, I find out how to opt-out of their newsletter (it’s here), but I can’t delete the account. I ended up writing an e-mail (support@thestreet.com) requesting my account be closed. (Will follow up)
Ditto for jobster.com and Xing.com. I am not using either of the linkedin.com-type site at all. Turns out, you can’t delete your jobster account, just disable all e-mail notifications and make your profile private (go to Account Settings and check all the “No”). I also sent en e-mail (customerservice@jobster.com) to request account deletion. Big thumbs up for Xing however, which makes it easier: you can delete your account easily.
